The first thing I did this week was work on cranking a chainsaw. Before I tried to crank the chainsaw my dad went over how to crank a chainsaw and walked me through it. The first thing he said to do was make sure the brake of the chainsaw is on. Next, he said to make sure the stop button is not on. Then you have to hold the chainsaw down and pull the crank, starting the chainsaw. After the chainsaw is running you want to rev it up so it remains running. My first attempt, the one in the photo, did not go well I could hold the chainsaw down, and it almost came back and hit me. My dad told me that there was an easier way, and that is to put the chainsaw on the ground and hold it with your foot. So, I proceeded to put it on the gravel and tried to crank it, but I still couldn't keep it stable. After not being able to crank it on the ground, I hopped on the trailer and cranked it after a few tries. The next thing I learned was how to cut small tree limbs because I am not yet ready for big limbs. My dad walked me through it and helped hold the limbs because they were light and liked to run away from me. To walk me through it he explained how that limbs under binds you have to cut up and when they are not you cut down. He also demonstrated by cutting the small limbs a few times. I did not struggle with cutting the limbs as much as I did with cranking the chainsaw. It went pretty well besides that the limbs kept moving when I was trying to cut them. My dad then held them down, and it was fine after that. After this week, I feel that I still need to work on my chainsaw skills and get more experience cutting.

My Genius Hour Project is about learning how to run a tree business. To run a tree business, you must be able to run a chainsaw, operate a skid-steer, and drop trees safely. Running a chainsaw allows you to cut trees, the most important skill in a tree business. Operating a skid-steer allows for fast productivity, allowing you to get the work done faster. The ability to drop trees safely means you can gain the trust of future customers. These are all vital skills to becoming a tree-man or running a tree business. I chose to be able to run a tree business as my project because it could help my dad. This is because he always needs more people working for him and people that know what they are doing. I also believe one day my dad could possibly pass ownership to me as he becomes old and he can not run his business himself. This project will help me prepare if that day ever happens by gaining skills for running a tree business. To be able to do this project my dad will teach me since he has lots of experience. First, I will learn how to use a chainsaw by being able to crank it and which way I must cut it to be effective. Next, I will learn how to operate a skid-steer by being able to work the grapple, spread gravel, and load logs into a dump truck. Finally, I will learn how to cut down trees in the safest manner by being able to control the tree as much as possible to land in the safest spot. To complete all of this, I will progress with this project on the weekends. I will show my progress on this project by taking videos. They will show the difference between first starting and the end of the project. I will include these videos on this website and the final presentation. To show that I am successful in this project I will be capable of running a chainsaw, operating a skid-steer, and cutting down trees safely. These skills will also be shown using videos.
